Household Hazardous Waste
Calhoun County has a hazardous waste drop-off collection program
every year. The items accepted include: oil-based paint, stains and
varnishes, varnish remover, paint thinner, solvents, cleaners,
flashlight batteries, antifreeze, pesticides, and outdated
prescriptions. Gasoline and kerosene must be in approved containers.
Please call 969-6341 in late January to find out the dates, times and
locations of the collections for the coming year. If you have other
questions, contact Environmental Health, Calhoun County Health
Department, at (269) 969-6341.
Disposal of Latex (water-based) Paint
Latex paint is considered non-hazardous waste. Your waste hauler will
take it with your trash pick-up provided it is in a solid form with the
lid of the can removed. Mix kitty litter or sand in the paint and leave
it in the sun to dry. Once the paint is solid leave the lid off so waste
hauler can verify this.
Help us save on the cost of our program. If we took latex paint, it
would use up funds that could be used for more environmentally
threatening hazardous waste.
Thank you,
Environmental Health Division
