After a distinguished career nearing 28
years of service, in 1996 Sheriff Byam retired from the Michigan
State Police with the specific intention of seeking the Office of
the Sheriff for Calhoun County. During his tenure with the Michigan
State Police he was promoted through the ranks from trooper to
captain in positions of increasing responsibility. He served as a
trooper, detective, post commander, assistant district commander,
assistant division commander and division commander. Sheriff Byam
completed his career with the State Police as Commanding Officer,
Special Operations Division, where his responsibilities included
statewide programs of Aviation, Operations, Traffic Services,
Prevention Services, Dare, Canine, Underwater Recovery, and the
Emergency Support Team.
Sheriff Byam is a graduate of the 10 week, 400 hour, Northwestern
University, Traffic Institute, School of Police Staff and Command.
During his career with the State Police, he received specialized
training in Management Training, Administration and Supervision,
Leadership Development, Labor Relations, Grievance Administration
and Contract Administration. He completed the Michigan Sheriff's
Association 80 hour New Sheriffs School in December of 1996.
Sheriff Byam moved to Calhoun County in 1982 when he was assigned
as the Post Commander of the Battle Creek State Police Post. He and
his wife, Judy, live in Fredonia Township south of Marshall. They
have three grown children and four grandchildren

Undersheriff Pope began his career in
law enforcement with the Battle Creek Police Department as a cadet
in 1968. He became a police officer in the Battle Creek Police
Department in 1971, working various assignments in the Patrol
Division. In 1975 he was assigned as a dispatcher.
In January of 1976 Undersheriff Pope was selected as the
department's School Safety Officer and initiated the department's
Officer Friendly Program. In that capacity he worked regularly in
Battle Creek's 15 public and 3 parochial schools for 4½ years,
becoming widely known in the community as "Officer Friendly."
In 1981 Undersheriff Pope was promoted to Sergeant and in 1983 he
was promoted to Deputy Police Chief. He served as support services
commander and then as patrol and investigations commander until 1987
when he was promoted to Chief of Police and later to Director of
Public Safety, serving in that capacity until his retirement from
the Battle Creek Police Department in 1996.
Undersheriff Pope has been with the Calhoun County Office of the
Sheriff since January 1997 having been appointed to that position by
Sheriff Allen L. Byam. He holds an Associate Arts Degree from
Kellogg Community College (1970) and Bachelor of Science Degree from
Western Michigan University (1987). Tom and his wife Karen have two
sons, Duston 22, and Troy 16.

Chief Deputy Marshall Weeks joined the
Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office in November of 1999. Prior to being
selected by Sheriff Byam to act as Chief Deputy, Weeks was employed
by the Michigan Department of State Police for 27 years. He retired
from the State Police in October of 1999 as the Assistant District
Commander in Northern Michigan. During his 27 year employment with
the State Police, Weeks was assigned to a wide range of
responsibilities. In addition to working on patrol, Weeks has been a
staff instructor at the state police training academy, he supervised
troopers as a desk sergeant, coordinated federal traffic safety
grants and was a post commander.
Chief Deputy Weeks is a graduate of Alma College. He has attended
numerous training programs throughout the country. He is a graduate
of the Law Enforcement Leadership Institute offered at Central
Michigan University. He instructs at Kirkland Community College
Regional Police Academy.
Weeks is married and a father of three children. He and his
family reside in the Marshall area. |
