as detailed in the Public Health Code. The scope of health care services
provided include communicable disease, environmental health, and primary
and preventive health care. CCPHD’s goals are determined by the Public
Health Code including:

problems

hazards in the community
- Inform, educate, and empower people about health
risks
- Mobilize community partnerships to identify and
solve problems
- Develop policies and plans that support individual
and community health efforts
- Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and
ensure safety
- Link people to health services and ensure the
provision of health care when otherwise unavailable
- Assure a competent public health workforce
- Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality
of services
- Research new insights and innovative solutions to
health problems
The clinical services division provides
Sexually Transmitted
Infection (STI) testing and treatment,
HIV/AIDS testing and counseling,
and partner notification for those who test positive or who are contacts
to someone with a positive test.
The
Immunization program provides vaccines to protect individuals
from disease, reducing and often times nearly eliminating disease.
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program serves low and
moderate income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants,
and children under age five (5) who require nutritional assistance. WIC
provides foods for infants, women, and children; nutrition education;
high-risk nutrition counseling; health care referrals; and breastfeeding
promotion and support.
CCPHD’s Communicable Disease (CD) division provides surveillance,
epidemiological investigation, and prevention and control of
communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB) and norovirus.
CCPHD's
Emergency Preparedness
program enhances Calhoun County’s ability to
prepare for a public health emergency due to outbreaks of infectious
disease, acts of terrorism, and other public health threats and
emergencies. Response plans are developed and continuously reviewed.
CCPHD regularly communicates and collaborates with local and region
partner organizations ensuring the safety of Calhoun County citizens.
The Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) program determines the
preventable causes of infant mortality from which prevention strategies
are developed and implemented.
Hearing and Vision screening for students and the school community
are provided to our youngest citizens.
The Children’s Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program supports
you as a caretaker. CSHCS provides coverage and referral for specialty
services and family-centered and community-based services assisting
persons with chronic health problems.
“Great Choices” teen pregnancy prevention program facilitates
discussions regarding responsible sexual activity decision-making.
The School Wellness program promotes successful student learning by
implementing strategies that promote student health and safety.
The
Environmental Health division addresses environmental health
issues including the
Food Protection Program (inspection and license
processing),
Waste Management (on-site wastewater, well, and sewage
disposal system permit issuance, and household hazardous waste), and
Water Supply (installation and investigation of groundwater quality
complaints).
The health education program participates in the development,
organization, and implementation of chronic disease prevention and
health risk reduction programs and in health related events. Current
interest areas include health disparities, sedentary lifestyle, lead,
teen pregnancy, and tobacco use.
The Calhoun County Lead Task Force works to increase community
awareness of lead poisoning, increase blood lead testing by physicians,
and increase environmental lead risk assessments and remediation.
The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Partnership (TP3) is a collaborative
effort addressing Calhoun County’s high teen pregnancy rate targeting
teens, parents, school officials, and community members. Community
support lead to TP3 development of two effective strategies including
parent education and social marketing.
CCPHD's Tobacco
program works to prevent people from starting to smoke, to promote
smoking cessation for current smokers, and to reduce exposure to
secondhand smoke. On September 6, 2007 the Calhoun County Board of
Commissioners passed the Calhoun County Clean Indoor Air Regulation.
This regulation requires that all public and private worksites in
Calhoun County create and implement a smoke-free policy prohibiting
smoking in all enclosed areas except for bars, restaurants, and tobacco
specialty stores.
