Our Mission
Michigan State University Extension helps people improve their lives
through an educational process that applies knowledge to critical
issues, needs and opportunities.
Purpose
MSU Extension provides educational programming that extends the
resources of MSU to the people of Michigan by developing, interpreting
and transmitting knowledge based information through applied science and
research.
MSU Extension provides information and offers on-going educational
programs in to help people better understand their environments, make
the best possible use of their resources and enhance the quality of life
for themselves, their families, and their communities through education
and wise decision making.
MSU Extension staff use a wide variety of information systems to
deliver educational information. These include community forums,
one-on-one and group instruction, the World Wide Web, satellite
downlinks, computer problems , instructional videos, consumer bulletins
and research reports.
Extension Program Areas
4-H Youth Development
The 4-H Youth Development Program mobilizes volunteers and
communities to meet the needs of youth by creating positive,
non-formal, experiential and educational opportunities to help youth
thrive in a complex and changing world. Programming is primarily
delivered through 4-H clubs and in-and out-of- school and community
based networks. The 4-H Youth Development Program is open to all
youth ages 5-19 (some project areas have a minimum age requirement).

Agriculture
The Agriculture program provides educational assistance to Calhoun
County producers in the areas of livestock production, farm financial
management, manure nutrient management, pest management, fruit &
vegetable production, horticulture, forestry, groundwater protection,
land use planning, farmland preservation and crop production including
research test plots. For more information on the Agriculture

Family & Consumer Sciences
The Family and Consumer Sciences area integrates university and
community resources to provide education to help individuals and
families succeed. Education focuses on the areas of food,
nutrition & health, food safety, family resource management and human

Family Nutrition Program
The Family Nutrition Program provides food and nutrition education
to individuals and families who are eligible for or receive food
stamps. The program teaches participants how to improve their
diets and manage their food budget. Lessons based on the needs
of the family are presented to groups in a public location or to
individuals during a home visit. For more information on the

Community Development and Natural Resources
The Community Development and Natural Resources area helps people
to addresses concerns regarding social and environmental conditions in
their communities. Several state-wide programs have been
designed to assist communities with planning and assessment,
responsible land use, strategic planning and leadership training.
